The University of Manitoba invites applications for a Professor in the area of Global Public Health and Equity, to be appointed for a full-time probationary, tenure-track position at the Professor rank. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and in accordance with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association collective agreement. The expected start date is July 1, 2024, or as mutually agreed upon.

The Professor in Global Public Health and Equity will provide leadership for the University of Manitoba and its Institute for Global Public Health in research, education and public health leadership focusing on integrating public health interventions and technologies that improve health outcomes for the underserved and disadvantaged populations, particularly countries of Latin America.

This position aligns with the University of Manitoba’s Strategic Research Plan, which identifies “Integrative Research in Health and Well-Being”, “Population and Global Health” and “Infectious Diseases” as established areas of research excellence.

THE POSITION
The successful candidate will be appointed to the Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS), Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (RFHS) (http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/health_sciences/medicine/units/chs/).

The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is a research and training-intensive interdisciplinary department that focuses on creation, preservation and communication of knowledge with respect to the health of populations and thereby contributes to the well-being of the people of Manitoba, Canada and the world. CHS has 52 full-time faculty members, including 10 Canada Research Chairs, and the largest graduate program in RFHS. CHS has active collaborative research and educational programs in epidemiology, biostatistics, health-related social sciences, global public health, Indigenous health, family health, violence and injury prevention, aging and other areas. While the primary appointment will be in CHS, the candidate will be positioned with the University of Manitoba’s Institute for Global Public Health (IGPH) (https://umanitoba.ca/institute-for-global-public-health/) and can have a cross-appointment with the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (MMID) (https://umanitoba.ca/medicine/department-medical-microbiology-and-infectious-diseases) and will collaborate with MMID researchers to build a strong, collaborative interdisciplinary research program. IGPH is a global leader in public health research focused on improving health equity at regional, national and international levels. MMID is at the forefront of basic and applied infectious disease research, with strong collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/programs/national-microbiology-laboratory.html). Within CHS the candidate will also have opportunities to collaborate with researchers from the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP) (https://umanitoba.ca/manitoba-centre-for-health-policy), and Ongomiizwin (https://umanitoba.ca/ongomiizwin/), the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences’ Indigenous Institute for Health and Healing, as well as researchers from across the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and other faculties.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to develop and lead an interdisciplinary research program and team that focuses on improving equity in public health strategies for infectious diseases by studying the interfaces between populations, pathogens and programs. Geographically, the focus will be on countries of the global south, and particularly Latin America, where the Institute for Global Public Health seeks partnerships. The Professor will have a leading mentorship role in graduate and post-graduate teaching, through the development of innovative research training opportunities. The successful candidate will be expected to incorporate human rights and social justice components into their research program, and promote a workplace environment that fosters Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in its daily operations. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in service activities, especially in relation to research.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold an MD and/or PhD degree in a relevant public health discipline. They will have an internationally recognized public health research program that focuses on infectious diseases and health equity, along with demonstrated abilities to translate research findings into high-impact public health programs and policies. They will have a demonstrated record of successful mentorship and training. Extensive leadership experience in public health research, policy and public health education in Latin America is an important criterion, particularly with respect to the study and application of innovative public health approaches and technologies to improve public health programs and services for underserved populations.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic and visionary individual who has leadership experience and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment. They will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrated experience and success in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, and human rights and social justice in research, teaching and service activities.
