The Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture in the Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture, Truro, invites applications from qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure stream faculty position at either the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on the candidate. Exceptional cases at the Professor level will be considered.

Dalhousie University is comprised of 6,000 faculty and staff amongst its 13 faculties. Current enrollment is 18,500 graduate and undergraduate students. As the largest university in the Maritimes and a member of Canada’s U15 research-intensive university group, Dal is an influential driver of the region’s intellectual, social and economic development. Dal has campuses in Halifax and Truro and a satellite of its medical school in Saint John, New Brunswick. This position is located on the scenic Truro campus. The town and surrounding areas are home to approximately 45,000 residents in a thriving social and business community that offers great schools, affordable living and convenient location accessible to Nova Scotia’s urban and outdoor scenes.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Animal Sciences with demonstrated expertise in welfare and physiology. Experience with livestock or poultry, evidence of multidisciplinary activity and potential to fit synergistically into cross-disciplinary teams concerned with animal welfare aspects of alternative sustainable animal production systems is required. Qualification as a professional agrologist in Canada is highly preferred. Companion animal experience is desirable. Expertise of the candidate must be supported by an excellent scientific publication record and research plan; at least two years postdoctoral experience is preferred. The incumbent will have demonstrated ability or potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching in areas that complement our teaching program; and excellent oral and written communication skills.

The successful candidate is expected to secure extramural research funding, including national tri-council funding, and lead an innovative and collaborative research program aimed at applying their expertise to improve animal health and welfare and contribute to the sustainability of food animal production. This position is part of a multi-departmental hire of three new faculty (immunology, dairy systems, welfare physiology) to complement recent faculty renewal hires and create teams to address the three interdisciplinary pillars of the department research strategy: Building sustainability and resiliency, Conscientious animal care, and Bioactives for health.

The successful candidate will be required to teach undergraduate (diploma and degree) students as well as mentor and train graduate students. The teaching assignment will include courses in animal welfare and/or stress-related physiology and reflect the expertise of the successful candidate within the needs of the Department. Service responsibilities include development of good working relationships with appropriate commodity and community groups, industry and government. The candidate is expected to become an active and engaged member of the Department, Faculty and University. Activities at local, national and international levels are expected to promote continuous improvement in research, teaching and learning at Dalhousie.

Animal Science and Aquaculture is home to over half of the Faculty of Agriculture’s students and offers technical, undergraduate and graduate programs, including Animal Science, Bioveterinary Science, an Animal Welfare Certificate, Veterinary Technology and Aquaculture. The incumbent will have access to quality research facilities to support welfare and physiology research including laboratory facilities, on-campus commercial-level poultry and mink units, active dairy and sheep units, a small animal holding facility and an aquaculture centre.
