Assistant / Associate Professor CRC Tier 2 in Indigenous Environmental Stewardship

The School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph invites applications and nominations for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Environmental Stewardship. The appointment will be tenure-track at the rank of Assistant or tenured at Associate Professor. Tier 2 Chairs are awarded for a five-year term and can be renewed only once. This position will contribute to an emerging cluster of expertise in Indigenous environmental stewardship at the University of Guelph. This Chair will be based in the School of Environmental Sciences (SES) of the Ontario Agricultural College.
Exceptional emerging Indigenous scholars, with the potential to become world leaders in a field related to environmental science and stewardship, are invited to apply. Eligible applicants for the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Environmental Stewardship must have a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent), demonstrated research excellence and productivity, and experience engaging and working with Indigenous communities. Experience in Indigenous Traditional Knowledge (ITK) and/or an interest and capacity to incorporate ITK into research goals and practice and to transfer knowledge to indigenous and non-indigenous communities/stakeholders is preferred. Fluency in a First Nations language will be considered an asset.
The successful candidate will be a catalyst for Indigenous environmental stewardship research, drawing on the University’s research strengths and aligning with the University Strategic Research Plan (https://www.uoguelph.ca/research/about-us/strategic-research-plan) and OAC’s Shared Priorities (https://www.uoguelph.ca/oac/sites/uoguelph.ca.oac/files/Our%20Shared%20Priorities%20Poster%20AODA.pdf).
The Chair will be expected to develop a productive independent, multidisciplinary and collaborative research program employing aquatic, terrestrial and/or atmospheric systems in contexts relevant to SES and Indigenous communities, such as conservation of medicine or food plants, ecological restoration, remediation, climate change impacts and adaptations, or mining impacts; this includes acquiring funds to support graduate training of students up to the doctoral level. Candidates with research interests examining policy development and planning or community sustainability will also be considered. The Chair is expected to work collaboratively with researchers on campus, nationally and internationally, and with First Nations, Métis, or Inuit communities. While this is primarily a research appointment, the successful candidate will be expected to teach a graduate or undergraduate course related to ITK and their discipline within environmental sciences.
The School of Environmental Sciences (https://www.uoguelph.ca/ses/) is a multi-disciplinary academic unit with researchers in a range of fields including: soil science, geology, agricultural meteorology, forest and ecosystem science, environmental microbiology, environmental toxicology, entomology and plant pathology. The School is home to the University of Guelph Arboretum. Researchers in the School have links across campus including Geography, Engineering, Integrative Biology, the Centre for Applied Groundwater Research, Animal Biosciences, Ridgetown Campus and Plant Agriculture, as well as with producer organizations and members of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair requires that applicants are exceptional emerging scholars and have fewer than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination. Nonetheless, applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree, where career breaks exist, such as parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, or other exceptional circumstances, may have their eligibility assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Positions are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat.
