Mount Royal University

About MRU
Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 14,000 credit students choose from 12 bachelor degrees and 36 majors.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

Mount Royal University is committed to removing barriers and fostering the inclusion of voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged in our society. In support of our belief that diversity in our faculty and staff enriches the work, learning and research experiences for the entire campus community, we strongly encourage members of the designated groups (women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and diverse sexual orientation and gender identities) to apply and self-identify.

In recognition of its leadership in social innovation and commitment to Indigenous education, Mount Royal University achieved AshokaU designation as a Changemaker Campus. A Changemaker Campus operates in socially and environmentally conscious ways to address local and global challenges. The designation recognizes investment in the continuous development of individuals who see the value of higher education in making the world a better place.

About the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies

The Faculty of Business and Communications Studies (FBCS) is composed of the EFDM accredited Bissett School of Business and the School of Communication Studies. The School of Business hosts four departments: General Management & Human Resources, Accounting & Finance, International Business & Supply Chain Management, and Entrepreneurship, Marketing & Social Innovation. The School of Communication Studies consists of four departments: Public Relation, Information Design, Broadcast Media Studies, and Journalism.

Bissett School of Business offers education in all major areas of management and business administration, including degrees, certificates and a diploma in aviation. The School has dedicated itself to providing an education that is on the leading edge of global business trends and community relevance.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program is designed to prepare students to be successful in the commercial, nonprofit, and public sectors of the Canadian and global economy while being engaged citizens in their communities. The BBA is primarily designed to prepare students for immediate employment upon graduation. The BBA may also be considered sufficient preparation for admission to appropriate and relevant professional accreditation programs as well as graduate degrees offered by many Canadian and international universities.

BBA students will have the opportunity to specialize in one of seven majors, including Accounting, Finance, General Management, Human Resources, International Business, Marketing and Supply Chain Management. We also offer a General Management major that allows students to specialize in other fields of business, including Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation. Students may also use the General Management major to pursue minors in areas of study offered outside of the Bissett School of Business.

The Bissett School of Business is an accredited member of EFDM, a global, non-profit, membership-driven organization dedicated to management development. With a network of 30,000 management professionals from academia, business, public service, and consultancies, EFMD plays a central role in shaping the global approach to management education and provides a unique forum for information, research, networking, and debate on innovation and best practice.

Faculty Position in the Department of Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Social Innovation

The Department of Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Social Innovation, Faculty of Business and Communication Studies at Mount Royal University invites applications for a tenure track position which will commence July 1, 2022, subject to final budgetary approval, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The rank is commensurate with experience.

The Department currently offers a degree program in Business Administration with a major, minor and certificate in Marketing, and minors and concentrations in both Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation. The Bachelor of Business Administration – Marketing program develops marketing professionals who can effectively blend insight, strategy, and creativity to bring extraordinary products, services, and campaigns to the marketplace. While considering the theoretical and functional strategy-focused curriculum common in most undergraduate marketing degrees, the ‘ideal marketer’ was reimagined with the support of industry. This reimagined curriculum is designed to support organizations that require future leaders to have foundation in both creative and strategic knowledge, skills, and abilities. Students are exposed to marketing in many experiential learning settings and work with real-life clients including non-profit organizations, marketing agencies, startups and large corporations, and in-house marketing teams across a variety of industries.

About the Role
The ideal candidate will have expertise and currency in the use of marketing fundamentals and the fundamentals of digital and social media marketing, however, candidates working in all areas of marketing are encouraged to apply.

Mount Royal University is committed to teaching and learning informed by scholarship. The successful candidate will demonstrate a history of teaching excellence, will have experience facilitating student learning in an undergraduate setting, and will possess a strong ability to integrate theories of scholarly teaching and learning within their practice, and will embody excellence in work integrated, experiential and active learning approaches to teaching in higher education. There is opportunity to participate in developing marketing program design and pedagogy.

The appointed individual will be expected to collaborate actively with community partners and be involved in course and program development. The successful candidate will actively contribute to enhance the School’s vision, culture, and reputation, including participating in service/committee related to the ongoing operations of the university.

A terminal degree in Marketing or in a related field is preferred, however, we will consider highly qualified candidates who are ABD, DBA, or a MBA(or equivalent). Preference will be given to candidates with professional industry experience in their field and who demonstrated excellence in innovative teaching at an undergraduate level.

New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/ scholarship/ service pattern (TSS) has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. MRU is open to “non traditional scholarship” paths including community engaged scholarship and teaching and learning. The teaching/ service pattern (TS) has a focus on teaching and service. The Academic Development Centre provides leadership, instructional design and curriculum development support, project planning and development assistance, technological expertise and media production support to a number of projects which are funded by both internal and external sources.

There is an option to change work patterns after tenure. This role is open to candidates in either the TSS or TS work pattern.

Applicants interested in the TSS work pattern must be committed to a scholarly research program that contributes to both academia and to the broader community.
