The Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in Disability Studies invites applications for a full-time probationary (tenure-track) position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2027. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Disability Studies is the first and only graduate program of its kind in Canada, arising from the impetus of disabled persons themselves and taking a human rights and anti-ableist approach to disability. Students in the program can complete a Master of Arts or a Master of Science, focusing on the social determinants of the experience of disability, shifting the emphasis from a medical, prevention and treatment model to a social, cultural and political one.

Qualifications

The program seeks an emerging scholar who has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service. The successful candidate will have a strong record of scholarship in Disability Studies. A record of service in the disability community and previous teaching experience are considered assets. Preference will be given to candidates with disabilities who are racialized and/or members of other underrepresented communities.

Candidates with PhDs in Disability Studies or related fields are encouraged to apply. Valued fields of scholarly expertise include but are not limited to: inclusive policies, pedagogies and technologies; disability history, rights and/or culture; intersections of disability, race, class, gender, sexuality and/or other axes of identity/power; global disability studies.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a productive research program, teach primarily graduate-level courses, supervise graduate research, and contribute to service. Alternative delivery modes of teaching (e.g. online instruction) may be available. The standard weighting of responsibilities for full-time equivalent faculty members in the Faculty of Arts is 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. The normal teaching load is 12 credit hours or 4 semester-long courses per year.

To enhance our program and create role models for a diverse population of students, we particularly invite applications from those who can support and enhance our diversity, including Indigenous peoples, women, racially marginalized persons, persons with disabilities, and persons of marginalized sexualities and genders.

Please include the following as part of your application: a cover letter, which includes your Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) statement; a curriculum vitae; a teaching dossier; and a summary of your research agenda. Please have two referees send reference letters on your behalf directly to: Search Committee Chair, Jocelyn Thorpe, Jocelyn.Thorpe@umanitoba.ca.

Applicants must submit their application for consideration through the University of Manitoba Careers Portal.

Applications will be reviewed following the closing date of the ad.
