The Department of Music in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor position in Music Technology and Production. This is an open tenure-track appointment to the Professorial Stream to commence July 1, 2027.

We seek an imaginative and innovative scholar-practitioner who will provide creative research and educational leadership to enhance and expand the existing music curriculum through the further development of live sound, recording engineering, mixing, mastering, and immersive sound (including Dolby Atmos), and music production. The successful candidate will have opportunities to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses and to supervise graduate students. The candidate will be expected to submit an application for a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grant within the first two to three years of employment. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to recording engineering and music production, model the creative use of audio technology in music production and performance, and contribute to capstone projects and industry connections. Because this is a highly collaborative program, we are looking for a specialist who can also contribute to existing curricular areas of the program, preferably with additional expertise in one or more of the following areas: classical music, jazz, popular music, songwriting/composition for media, or world music.

Candidate Qualifications:

• Degree: PhD or DMA or a PhD or DMA near completion by the appointment’s start; or a PhD-equivalent specialized doctorate, such as a DMus or EdD; or an MA or MFA combined with a substantial record of nationally or internationally recognized professional experience, research/creation, publications, or equivalent creative or professional achievement in a relevant field is required.
• Scholarship:
• A coherent and well-articulated program of research/research-creation and/or professional practice and specialization focused on audio technology.
• A record or evident promise of generating innovative, substantive, rigorous, and as appropriate, externally funded research and/or research-creation.
• A record or evident promise of making influential contributions and demonstrating excellence in the field (e.g., a research statement outlining a program of scholarly activity and a coherent research trajectory). 
  • Teaching:
• A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students (e.g., a teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations, including in high-priority areas such as experiential education, technology-enhanced learning and community-based learning; teaching evaluations).
• Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or the potential to contribute through administrative and committee work.
• Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.
  • Additional: Experience in the production of a variety of musical styles including those currently represented in the department as well as others emerging from contemporary global and Black musical expression is an asset.
• Familiarity with video production, visual media, or multimedia performance would be an asset but is not required.

Hiring Policies:

• The anticipated starting salary for this position at the rank of Assistant Professor is in the range of $130,000 to $160,000 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. York University offers generous benefits and salary provisions.
