Limited Term Appointment
WOMEN & GENDER STUDIES (WGST) and WOMEN, GENDER & SEXUALITY STUDIES (WGSS) at Saint Mary’s University, on the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people, invites applications for an 8-month, limited term appointment, with a start date of September 1, 2022. We seek a critically engaged scholar with a demonstrated teaching and research commitment to critical, interdisciplinary work in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The successful candidate will demonstrate capacity and/or experience with teaching large undergraduate classes, and an interest in supporting the capacity of our programs and students. Applicants should have a demonstrated capacity to teach Introduction to Women and Gender Studies. A demonstrated capacity to teach at least two of the following courses would also be an asset: Foundations in Sexuality Studies, Trans Studies, Transnational Feminisms.
A PhD in Women and Gender Studies or a related field is preferred, but candidates with a Master’s degree and university teaching experience and/or relevant professional experience will be considered. WGSS is committed to equity and diversity as essential to academic excellence; lived experience at the intersections of queer/trans, racialization, colonization, and Indigeneity will be considered a scholarly asset. Women and Gender Studies (MA), and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies (minor), emphasize the interdisciplinary basis of Women and Gender Studies, its community linkages, and its grounding in feminist theories and methods. Courses in WGSS lead to a fuller understanding of how gender and intersecting variables of power shape individuals and groups, cultures, ways of knowing, and struggles for social justice and change. Students in the program learn feminist theories and methods with which to transform the norms and forms of domination that socially construct women/trans/non-binary in oppressive ways, and that discourage practices of femininity and masculinity that hinder all genders from participating fully in society.
Applicants should submit an application package consisting of the following six items only, merged into one file:
1. a letter of application clearly addressing the criteria above, including how the applicant’s qualifications, expertise, and lived experience will enrich a) the Department’s teaching needs, b) the intellectual culture of the Department, c) student training and mentoring, d) the wider community and the University;
2. a curriculum vitae;
3. a teaching dossier including evidence of teaching effectiveness and syllabi for courses taught and/or proposed that directly address the criteria above;
4. examples of recent scholarly writing, community research, or reports;
5. graduate school transcripts;
6. the names and contact information for three referees.
