The School of Global Health in the Faculty of Health at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor position in Public Health. This is an open tenure-track appointment to the Professorial Stream to commence July 1, 2027.

The School of Global Health https://www.yorku.ca/health/globalhealth/ consists of a highly committed interdisciplinary group of scholars and educators with a diverse focus across healthcare, public health, social determinants of health, and planetary health. It offers the first dedicated undergraduate global health degree program in Canada and a highly distinctive interdisciplinary PhD program in global health. Through cross-disciplinary programming, innovative course design, diverse experiential learning, and a dynamic and supportive academic community environment, our students receive the training and education to create big ideas that make an impact on the world.

We invite applications from candidates whose scholarship addresses complex challenges in global and public health through innovative, community-engaged, and equity-oriented approaches. We especially welcome applications from candidates whose work contributes to transforming the structures, systems, and knowledge practices that produce health inequities. Relevant research specializations in global and public health may include planetary health and climate justice; implementation science and evaluation; transdisciplinary approaches; artificial intelligence and data justice; decolonizing approaches and Indigenous health sovereignty; syndemics and complex challenges; health economics; clinical epidemiology; and other relevant specializations advancing global and public health equity.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to connect global health research with public health policy and practice and to work reciprocally with communities, Indigenous partners, public health agencies, governments, and other organizations in Canada and internationally. Importantly, the successful candidate will contribute to the development, delivery, student supervision, and evaluation of an accredited professional Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Global Health that prepares graduates for leadership in public and global health practice, policy, programs, and research. They will also support the overall growth, collegial governance processes, and academic community engagement activities covering the School’s undergraduate and doctoral programs.   

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Degree: Master of Public Health (MPH); and PhD or ScD by the appointment’s start in global health, public health, health services or systems research, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, implementation science, social and behavioural sciences, environmental health, Indigenous health, or a related field, are required.
  • Scholarship:
  • A coherent and well-articulated program of research and specialization in the fields of global health and public health.
  • A record or evident promise of effective engagement with public health policy and/or program stakeholders (e.g., government, public health agencies, health care organizations, community organizations) in international settings in the context of research or professional practice.
  • A record or evident promise of generating innovative, substantive, rigorous, and as appropriate, externally funded research in global health and public health.
  • A record or evident promise of making diverse and influential scholarly or professional contributions and demonstrating excellence in the fields of global health and public health (e.g., publications in key journals, major presentations, community contributions, policy impacts, awards and/or accolades).
    • Teaching:
    • A record or evident promise of teaching one or more core public health subjects and on fundamental global health principles and practices.
  • A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to student success and professional skills development (e.g., teaching accomplishments, pedagogical innovations, student and peer evaluations, awards).
  • A record or evident promise of interdisciplinary, experiential, learner-engaged, and decolonial teaching, mentorship, and supervision. 
  • Suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.

Additional:

  • Completion of a Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredited MPH program or a record or evident promise of knowledge of CEPH accredited MPH programs.
    • A record or evident promise of teaching in a public health or global health program is preferred.
    • A record or evident promise of developing, implementing, or enhancing graduate-level curricula is preferred.
    • A record or evident promise of establishing and sustaining formal community partnerships in Canada or internationally is preferred.
    • A record or evident promise of working in low- and middle-income countries, or with Indigenous communities, rural or remote communities, or historically underserved populations is preferred.
    • A record or evident promise of coordinating or supervising student placements or related applied projects in Canada or internationally is preferred.

Hiring Policies:

  • The anticipated starting salary for this position at the rank of Assistant Professor is in the range of $132,000 to $162,000 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. York University offers generous benefits and salary provisions.
