Several challenges are facing Structural Engineering today. Climate change will lead to increased incidence of hurricanes, earthquakes, extreme heat, flooding, and wildfires – all of which will necessitate major changes to protect structures from these extreme loading events. Resilient structural design accounts for the probability of extreme loading events, and the need to balance the economics of the structure with risk of structural failure under these extreme events. Resilient structural design incorporates one or more of the areas of advanced computational mechanics, innovative structural materials, and innovative structural mechanics.

The availability of high-performance computers and advances in numerical tools have increased the demand for computer-based tools in several engineering disciplines (structures, geotechnics, biomechanics, material science, building physics). Structural engineering design consultants commonly use advanced computational mechanics tools, such as finite element programs, in day-to-day design activities. The next generation of engineers will need to undertake advanced analysis of structural systems, especially to evaluate resilient structural engineering designs.

If you have experience and a passion for research in these areas, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Structural Engineering. This position is part of the University of Alberta’s priority to build a diverse faculty; thus, candidates from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. We are seeking scholars that are motivated to join and collaborate with our vibrant Structures Group, recognized as a world leader in the discipline. Over the last 50 years, Canadian design standards in Reinforced Concrete and Structural Steel – as well as those in other countries – have originated from research conducted at the I.F. Morrison Structures Lab. The Group currently consists of 10 faculty members with expertise in a broad range of structural materials (steel, concrete, masonry, timber and nanofibre), building physics, structural health monitoring, structural mechanics, and artificial intelligence. Applicants with expertise in advanced computational mechanics and/or structural resiliency are encouraged to apply.

A PhD in structural engineering or a closely related field is required. They are expected to be or become a licensed Professional Engineer through the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA, https://www.apega.ca). Licensure must be obtained within five years from the date of hire.

Consideration will be given to candidates with a record of research impact, which might include publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings; developing technology or software solutions; and addressing socio-economic or environmental needs; among other things.
