The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream position in Mechanical Engineering. This is an open teaching-centred, tenure-track appointment to commence July 1, 2027.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering https://lassonde.yorku.ca/mech/ is at the forefront of developing technologies ranging from advanced materials and digital twins to aerospace systems, clean energy technologies and sustainable transportation. Established in 2012, the Lassonde School of Engineering http://lassonde.yorku.ca/, York University offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs to educate multidisciplinary problem solvers, critical thinkers, and entrepreneurs who understand creativity, communications, social responsibility, and cultural diversity.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses with an emphasis on engineering design. They will also provide creative educational leadership in enhancing teaching and learning through curricular and pedagogical innovation in the classroom and at the program level. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department at a committee and administrative level.
Candidate Qualifications:
- A BEng (or equivalent) and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, either in hand or near completion by the appointment’s start is required.
- Strong commitment to effective and reflective pedagogy and student success, with the capacity to integrate theoretical and practical perspectives into mechanical engineering teaching, learning, curriculum, program design, and evidence of good judgement. Experience with engineering curriculum development including project-based learning, assessment of design outcomes, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred.
- A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching at the university level and dedication to students (e.g. teaching accomplishments, pedagogical innovations, and official student and peer evaluations).
- A record or evident promise of making valuable contributions through administrative and committee service.
- A record or evident promise of experience in engineering design education, including cornerstone and capstone design, design pedagogy, and studio- or maker-based instruction.
- A record or evident promise of experience integrating technology into engineering education, including the effective and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment.
- Industry experience in engineering design, product development, and project management is an asset.
- Candidates must hold, or be eligible to obtain, a Professional Engineering (or Limited) license in Canada shortly after their appointment.
Hiring Policies:
- The anticipated starting salary for this position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream is in the range of $134,000 to $164,000 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. York University offers generous benefits and salary provisions.
