The Department of Civil Engineering in the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream position in Structural Engineering/Structural Materials. This is an open teaching-centred, tenure-track appointment to commence July 1, 2027.
The Department of Civil Engineering https://lassonde.yorku.ca/civil/is designing and building the systems we rely on every day, from resilient infrastructure and transportation networks to clean water solutions and sustainable communities. Established in 2012, the Lassonde School of Engineering http://lassonde.yorku.ca/, York University offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs to educate multidisciplinary problem solvers, critical thinkers, and entrepreneurs who understand creativity, communications, social responsibility, and cultural diversity.
The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for teaching and program development, with particular emphasis on the development, enhancement, coordination and delivery of laboratory practicum components of undergraduate courses and possibly graduate courses, student capstone projects, and common core engineering courses. The successful candidate will also contribute to supporting student learning through pedagogical innovation, competency-based assessment, interactions with industry, work-integrated learning opportunities, extracurricular activities, competitions, clubs, learning technologies, and collegial governance of the program. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued advancement of the Department's educational programs and may have opportunities for programmatic leadership. The candidate will contribute to the service duties of the Department, Faculty and University level as is expected by all faculty members.
Candidate Qualifications:
- PhD in Structural Engineering/Structural Mechanics, or a closely related field, either in hand or near completion by the appointment’s start, is required.
- Strong commitment to pedagogy and student success, the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to Structural Engineering/Structural Mechanics teaching, learning and program design, and evidence of good judgment and a reflective approach to innovation in teaching. Experience with curriculum development including experiential education, technology-enhanced learning, structural modelling or structural monitoring, AI-based educational technologies and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred.
- A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching Structural Engineering/Structural Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials, Computational Methods in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Capstone Design, and related Civil Engineering and common core engineering courses, including but not limited to ethics, creative problem solving, and communication, engineering design, project management at the university level (e.g. teaching accomplishments, pedagogical innovations, student and peer evaluations, or other relevant evidence).
- A record of evident promise of making valuable contributions through administrative and committee service.
- Candidates must hold or be eligible to obtain a Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) license in Canada shortly after their appointment.
- Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.
- A record or evident promise of experience or interest in curriculum and program development and enhancement will be considered an asset. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in accreditation and curriculum quality assurance processes.
- A record or evident promise of potential to contribute to student engagement through industry engagement, work-integrated learning, extracurricular activities, competitions, and student clubs will be considered an asset.
Hiring Policies:
- The anticipated starting salary for this position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream is in the range of $134,000 to $164,000 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. York University offers generous benefits and salary provisions.
