Assistant Professor, Tenure Stream – Physical Therapy
The Department of Physical Therapy in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of critical gerontology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on January 1, 2021 or shortly thereafter.
We are seeking candidates conducting rehabilitation research focused on aging, the aging process and enhancing quality of life and health for older adults using a critical approach. Critical approaches in gerontology are interested in how health and aging are socially, politically, and culturally constructed, and how they are contested both within health care and society more broadly.
Applicants must have earned a PhD or an equivalent doctoral degree, in a related field including but not limited to rehabilitation sciences, bioethics, health policy, social and behavioural health sciences, critical disability studies, sociology, equity-related studies (e.g. critical race, Indigenous studies) or a related area. Candidates will have completed at least a one-year post-doctoral fellowship or equivalent and will have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests are distinct and/or complementary to our existing departmental foci. The successful candidate is expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. A physical therapist is preferred but not required.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals, a growing record of attracting funding as principal or co-principal investigator, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, strong endorsements from referees of high standing and the submitted research statement outlining their research program. We also value other forms of scholarly activities and outputs for example community engagement, co-creation of knowledge, arts-based contributions, and contributions to policy and social change.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching dossier, teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong endorsements by referees. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters, as well as strong letters of reference. Candidates should ideally have relevant experience with teaching and student supervision.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
