University of British Columbia

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, invites applications for up to two tenure-track faculty positions in the field of Advanced Manufacturing at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter. A tenured Associate or Full Professor appointment will be considered in exceptional cases. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in industrial robotics and automation, robot assisted manufacturing, precision manufacturing and metrology, which are areas complementary to existing departmental expertise. Relevant industrial experience is an asset.

The Faculty of Applied Science at UBC has recently launched a new undergraduate program in Manufacturing Engineering that is jointly run by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Materials Engineering on the Vancouver campus, and the School of Engineering on the Okanagan campus. The successful candidates will support the program and be appointed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering or jointly appointed in the Department of Materials Engineering. Undergraduate teaching will primarily take place in the new Manufacturing Engineering undergraduate program while research will be undertaken within the department(s).

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline, and should demonstrate the potential to achieve excellence in research and teaching. Successful candidates will develop an independent, internationally recognized research program, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise and mentor Master’s and Ph.D. students, and provide service to the University and the community. They are expected to register as a Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia.

UBC’s Vancouver campus is situated at the tip of Point Grey on the unceded lands of the Musqueam people, surrounded by forest, ocean and mountains. UBC seeks to recruit and retain a workforce that is representative of Vancouver's diversity, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer students richly varied disciplines, perspectives and ways of knowing and learning.

All of our work is shaped by our values: professionalism and integrity; scholarship and teaching excellence; commitment to students; partnerships and collegiality; initiative, innovation, and willingness to change; community, the environment, and sustainability. Interested applicants should submit a single PDF file including a cover letter, a CV, a list of four references, and research, teaching, and diversity statements. Applications must be submitted online at (JR4447); emailed applications will not be considered. Our department welcomes and encourages applications from members of marginalized groups.
