Assistant Professor, Urban and Regional Policy

The Department of Human Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in Urban and Regional Policy. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have a PhD in Geography, Planning, Urban Studies, Economics, Public Policy, or a cognate discipline at the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. Applicants must have a research focus in urban and regional policy and using quantitative methods to explore areas such as urban socio-spatial inequality, local and regional economic development policy, social exclusion, race and space, social infrastructure, and climate change. Candidates must be able to teach a core course in urban economics in the City Studies program and will be required to teach data analysis for urban/regional policy making. Additional teaching strengths in data visualization or mapping would be an asset. We welcome applications from individuals whose research foci include the Global South or North. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching, and be able to communicate effectively as an undergraduate and graduate teacher.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program to complement and augment the existing scholarly profile of the Department of Human Geography at University of Toronto Scarborough. The successful candidate must have an emerging record of scholarly accomplishment and provide evidence of excellence in research, as demonstrated by publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals and/or with leading academic presses, or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, and strong endorsements by referees of high international standing.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching and emerging excellence as a graduate supervisor through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

The successful candidate also will become a member of the tri-campus graduate department of Geography and Planning, and will teach and supervise graduate students in that department.
