Director, Mukwa Waakaa'igan

Algoma University

Algoma University invites applications for the position of Director, Mukwa Waakaa’igan in the Department of Nyaagaaniid Anishinaabe Initiatives. Algoma is seeking a leader with experience in Indigenous and cross-cultural education to lead the Mukwa Waakaa’igan Centre and create spaces to explore and carry forward Reconciliation from cross-cultural informed and multi-disciplinary perspectives.

Algoma University campuses are located on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabek, the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Mushkegowuk Cree, as well as hereditary lands of the Métis Nation. Algoma University was originally established in Sault Ste. Marie in 1965 as Algoma University College and became an independent University in 2008. Algoma is a growing and innovative institution with a dual Special Mission to serve as a teaching-oriented university while cultivating cross-cultural learning between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The University currently provides students with rich learning and research opportunities in a range of liberal arts, sciences and professional disciplines. The University offers countless opportunities for students to learn inside and outside of the classroom. Experiential learning and student research opportunities are critical elements of Algoma’s approach, helping students apply what they learn in “real world” settings. The Mukwa Waakaa’igan Centre will be a place where the sharing of knowledge, learning and research take place, along with cultural, artistic, healing and ceremonial activities. It will serve as a national centre for cross-cultural learning, providing safe and inclusive spaces for all people with respect to learning, Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing. Through guided and self-guided tours, visitors of the Centre will learn about the history of the site, the legacy of residential schools and create spaces to explore and carry forward reconciliation.
The Director, Mukwa Waakaa’igan reports to the Vice President Nyaagaaniid Anishinaabe Initiatives, Equity, and Student Success on all day-to-day matters and is responsible for leading the development and delivery of educational, cultural and community projects and exhibits. The position oversees the implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on programming, identifies work plans, and organizational plans and priorities. Carrying forward the special agreement with the Shingwauk Residential School Centre (SRSC) Heritage Committee, the Director provides oversight and directs operations of the SRSC. Under the direction of the Nyaagaaniid, the incumbent leads the University to fulfilling its special mission and meeting institutional targets. The Director, Mukwa Waakaa’igan is responsible for securing funding, and will work in a team environment to identify programming, exhibitions, and sustainability gaps, and develop solutions and strategies to mitigate these gaps. This position also supervises full and part time staff under collective agreements.

As the ideal candidate you will have experience in leadership, Indigenous and cross-cultural education and a graduate degree focused on a subject matter related to Mukwa Waakaa’igan objectives and mandate. Alternatively, you will have a combination of education and experience, particularly “sharing, healing and learning” in relation to the legacy of the Residential Schools. You have expert knowledge and understanding of Anishinaabe (First Nation, Inuit and Métis) culture, history and present-day concerns. You will bring a successful track record of fundraising and grant-writing, and proven administrative and leadership ability in progressively more responsible positions. You have teaching or lecturing experience, particularly in a related subject matter. The incumbent should also have a demonstrated success in building and growing relationships, and a demonstrated ability to create a safe, positive, equitable, and inclusive work environment for staff and volunteers.
