Director of Scientific Administration

Institut Périmètre de Physique Théorique

Perimeter Institute is a leading centre for scientific research, training and educational outreach in foundational theoretical physics.

We are seeking a Director of Scientific Administration to lead the creation, delivery and measurement of a broad range of scientific programs at Perimeter Institute. This is a unique opportunity to play a critical role in the growth of one of the world’s leading centers in theoretical physics during the most exciting period in decades for fundamental physics.

This senior leadership position reports to the institute’s Director, and works closely with the Faculty Chair and the Chief Operating Officer and his senior management team. The incumbent interacts regularly with Perimeter researchers and oversees a Scientific Administration team of five.

In under 20 years, Perimeter Institute has become a major success story: an innovative, world-leading centre of research, training and outreach in one of the lowest-cost, highest-impact areas of science − fundamental physics. Through visionary public and private support, sustained focus, and careful strategy, Perimeter Institute is now ranked among the top theoretical physics institutes in the world.

Perimeter Institute aims to set a global example in its research, training, and outreach excellence and foster an environment and culture unlike any other, providing fertile ground for cutting-edge research and breakthrough discoveries.

Perimeter is not a place for “business as usual.” We have an impatience and desire to discover, to recognize clearly when conventional approaches are failing, and to open and explore promising new avenues. We constantly challenge ourselves to be agile, entrepreneurial, and interdisciplinary, and to look beyond narrow, overspecialized concerns towards the big picture.

The Director of Scientific Administration is a strategic thinker and leader who is highly motivated by the opportunity to play a critical role in the creation, growth, delivery, and measurement of Perimeter Institute’s scientific programs including conferences, workshops, research centres and initiatives, visitors, seminars, library services, interactions with university partners, and collaboration agreements, among others. Additional information can be found at

The successful candidate will possess an entrepreneurial streak and an ability to think creatively and innovatively in a fast-paced, ambitious environment.

With a minimum of ten years of senior leadership in a related position, the Director will be comfortable working in a nimble, dynamic, and highly collaborative organizational structure.

Key to the incumbent’s success will be an ability to imagine and capitalize on opportunities to further Perimeter’s research by building upon already successful programs.

Located in Canada’s Technology Triangle, Waterloo Region is made up of three vibrant cities, Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, plus four scenic, predominantly rural townships. The twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo enjoy a growing recognition for high standards of education and technological innovation with two world-class universities, an internationally respected applied arts and technical college, and over 1,000 high-tech firms and start-ups. In 2007, Waterloo was named the world’s Intelligent Community of the Year and in 2016 our Canadian Prime Minister praised the Waterloo region as an "extraordinary hub" for innovation "at the cutting edge of the global economy."

The region has historic landmarks, a broad selection of excellent restaurants, thriving farmers’ markets, art galleries, museums, antique shops and factory outlets. The entertainment scene offers a wealth of live theatre, concerts by local and visiting artists, and performances by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony at a world-class concert hall. Residents of the Region enjoy superb recreation and sporting facilities, including premier sports fields, Olympic sized ice pads, swimming facilities, and golf courses. As well, there are over 1,700 hectares of parkland and more than 150 kilometres of trails throughout the cities and along the Grand River. Linked by major transportation routes to Toronto and other southern Ontario centres and with a light rail transit system under construction, the Region is also served by an international airport.

With a combined population approaching 600,000, Waterloo Region is one of the fastest-growing communities in Ontario and is expected to reach a total population of 730,000 by 2031. The Region offers the best of both worlds. The progressive balance of urban and rural landscapes and lifestyles, skilled labour force, proximity to major North American markets and transportation networks, and diverse ethnic makeup contribute to the continued success of the area.
