Faculty Position in Quantitative Finance and Financial Risk Analytics

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo invites applications for one tenure-track faculty position in the broad area of Quantitative Finance and Financial Risk Analytics. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, asset pricing, financial econometrics, financial machine learning, portfolio optimization, quantitative risk management, algorithmic trading, computational finance, insurance-linked securities, actuarial applications of financial engineering, and other areas of quantitative finance. While excellence in research and teaching is the primary criterion, practical experience or commensurate research activities in the areas of quantitative finance, risk management, insurance, pensions, or related industries will be considered an asset. If circumstances warrant, appointment at Associate or Full Professor with tenure may be considered. 

Candidates must have a PhD in Quantitative Finance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related area, and have potential or proven ability to develop an internationally recognized research program. Candidates should also have excellent communications skills and a strong commitment to teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The expected start date for the position is July 1, 2027, though the actual start date is flexible. The salary range for the position is $125,000 to $175,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

The University of Waterloo is one of Canada’s leading universities with over 40,000 full and part-time students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science is one of the top academic units for the statistical and actuarial sciences in the world and is home to over 50 research active full-time faculty and more than 150 graduate students in programs including Actuarial Science, Quantitative Finance, Data Science, Statistics, and Biostatistics. The department offers a vibrant research environment over a wide range of areas and benefits from close relationships with many research groups on campus including the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute, the School of Public Health Sciences, the Waterloo Climate Institute, and the Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience. 

The department offers a PhD program in Actuarial Science and Quantitative Finance, and several master’s programs, including the professional Master of Quantitative Finance (MQF) and the Master of Actuarial Science (MActSc). The department is also home to a very vibrant major in Financial Analysis and Risk Management, which offers a specialization in Financial Analysis recognized by the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute, and a specialization in Risk Management accredited by Professional Risk Managers' International Association (PRMIA).
