The Faculty of Health at York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for the Helen Carswell Research Chair in Dementia Care. The successful candidate will be appointed to a tenure-track professorial stream appointment in the School of Health Policy and Management at the rank of Associate or Full Professor effective July 1, 2021. The appointment as Chair will be for a five-year term commencing on or about July 1, 2021, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The Chair will work with the Alzheimer’s Society of York Region and other community partners to lead the design, implementation, analysis, and dissemination of a complementary set of evaluations to assess the impact of and inform best practices for dementia care, especially day service programs in the York Region and the province of Ontario. As part of this exceptional opportunity, the chair will manage more than $1.258 million in expendible funding to undertake the evaluations and support graduate students.

A Ph.D. in Health Science, Public Health, or other relevant area is required. Candidates must possess superior competencies for Canadian Evaluators (cf., https://evaluationcanada.ca/competencies-canadian-evaluators) such as knowledge of evaluation theory, practice, standards, guidelines and ethics; the development of logic models; technical, strategic, methodological (quantitative, and qualitative) and interpretive skills; understanding of stakeholder culture and contexts; sound project management skills; highly developed social and personal skills to communicate and interact with stakeholders. Designation as or eligibility to become a Credentialed Evaluator would be a substantial asset. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of experience designing, managing and communicating complex program and/or policy evaluations in health and/or social service settings using a variety of evaluation methods and approaches. Expertise or professional experience in health care evaluation and health care of older adults and/or persons with dementia would be an asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an independently funded program of research related to the care and resiliency of older adults and/or persons with dementia. Candidates must have an outstanding record of research demonstrating excellence or rising eminence in their field, and a proven ability to disseminate results to audiences through high quality peer reviewed journals, books/chapters, technical reports, monographs, presentations, media, etc.

As the Carswell Chair, the successful candidate will receive a reduced teaching load. However, the position will involve some graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching in areas such as program evaluation. Candidates must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Candidates must provide evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching through: a teaching statement/philosophy; a description of teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations in areas using experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
