About the Position:

The Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies invites applications from qualified candidates for a one-year term position in Human Rights and Social Justice at the rank of Instructor I beginning July 1, 2020.

The IIS invites applications from qualified candidates with a demonstrated interest and interdisciplinary research agenda in the area of Human Rights and Social Justice. The successful candidate will be expected to teach multiple courses in human rights foundations and theory, including political repression and political violence. The primary duties of this position are teaching and administration. There are no research requirements or expectations associated with the position.

About the Academic Unit:

The Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) is the home of two interdisciplinary programs of study: Childhood and Youth Studies and Human Rights and Social Justice. IIS brings together faculty and students from across the campus who share research interests that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries, in the arts, social and natural sciences.

Drawing from a wide range of interdisciplinary topics and approaches from the humanities and social sciences, the Human Rights and Social Justice program at Carleton University provides an overview of historical and contemporary human rights issues and their impact on human lives in different cultural contexts. The program offers students an opportunity to examine and critically assess the various strategies and mechanisms that have been used nationally and internationally to address these issues, including social movements, domestic legislation, international statutes, and human rights declarations and conventions.

The position requires an Ph.D. in Human Rights or a closely related field with a strong emphasis on human rights and/or social justice, and experience in teaching at the undergraduate level. Preferred candidates will possess evidence of excellence in teaching, a commitment to engaged pedagogy, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
