Position # 20121 CLTI

We are searching for an excellent instructor for a 9.5-month Contractually Limited Term (CLT) position at the level of Instructor I in the Department of Biology. Primary responsibilities are development and delivery of two core courses that are required for Biology majors, including BIOL 2043 Biodiversity of Plants and Algae (Fall term: all lectures and four labs per week, with labs offered in alternate weeks) and BIOL 2073 Animal Biodiversity (Winter term: labs only, with five labs per week, and labs offered in alternate weeks). The instructor would also be expected to teach lectures and one lab per week, offered in alternate weeks, in BIOL 3243 Plant Growth and Development (Winter term).

Applicants must have a MSc or PhD degree in biology or a closely related field, with expertise in botany and organismal biology. The department is particularly interested in an individual with a strong teaching background, a broad knowledge of biodiversity, experience in developing and delivering laboratory activities, and the ability to teach in person and online. Evidence for teaching excellence includes positive endorsements from referees, a statement of teaching philosophy, course evaluations if available, or demonstrated performance in other teaching related activities.

Acadia University is located in Sipekne’katik and is close to many coastal, agricultural, and forest ecosystems. The Department of Biology offers a diverse, stimulating, and supportive community of researchers and facilities. We are one of the the largest departments in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science, with over 425 majors. Undergraduate teaching is a primary focus of the department, and we prioritize experiential learning with hands-on laboratory exercises and field work. Teaching and research are integrated throughout our program, and we provide diverse course offerings that support students interested in a wide range of careers. Available facilities include world-class glasshouse space and growth cabinets at the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre, the Harriet Irving Botanical Garden, which showcases plant communities typical of the region, and the E.C. Smith Herbarium. The Biology Department also houses a teaching museum with a wide variety of specimens suitable for the BIOL 2073 Animal Biodiversity labs.
