Thompson Rivers University


The Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Library is seeking a collaborative, learner-centred, and motivated Williams Lake Campus Librarian. This tenure-track position is a member of TRU Libraries and the TRU Librarians' Department and will work at the Williams Lake Campus as the sole campus librarian, responsible for the day-to-day operation of campus library services.
TRU's Williams Lake campus is located approximately three hours northwest of Kamloops, in the heart of the scenic Cariboo region, on T'exelcemc territory within the unceded traditional lands of the Secwépemc Nation. Thirty percent of the student population is Indigenous, and the campus enjoys excellent education partnerships often delivering programs on-site in Indigenous communities. While the campus does serve degree students, it is primarily a two-year transfer institution for certificate, diploma, and trades programs.

The Williams Lake Campus Librarian reports to the University Librarian and works collaboratively with the Associate Dean of the Williams Lake Campus as well as with other librarians in the TRU Libraries. The position is responsible for learning and research assistance and liaison services for the students and faculty of the Williams Lake Campus. Responsibilities include selecting and evaluating print and electronic resources for the Williams Lake collection, engaging students in the learning process by providing library programming, instructing classes, facilitating workshops and individual research consultations, and creating online guides and tutorials. The successful candidate will join a committed team of library professionals and will be expected to be a full participant, along with the rest of the library team, in defining and achieving library goals. As a bipartite faculty member, the candidate will actively pursue professional role activities for 80% of their time and be expected to spend 20% of their time on service activities.

Liaison and Research Support
• Serves as the primary point of contact for Williams Lake Campus library users, maintaining an engaging presence for the library.
• Collaborates with colleagues to deliver in-depth, high-quality service to meet the research and learning needs of the Williams Lake campus, students and faculty. This encompasses scheduled library research help (reference) desk service and individual service through face-to-face and/or online reference tools, including the provincial virtual reference service AskAway.
• Participates in the selection and evaluation of print, electronic, and media resources to support the collection, within the collection and acquisitions requirements of TRU Libraries.
• Contributes to bibliographic and information literacy instructional programming at the Williams Lake Campus; teaches information literacy for the Williams Lake Campus faculty in a variety of disciplines. Provides learning supports for students and faculty in programs ranging from high school equivalent courses to degree programs.
• Prepares and maintains research guides to support learning needs.
• Assesses user needs to develop and maintain relevant, high-quality services and information resources; seeks to engage multiple user groups in library outreach including providing support to the broader Williams Lake community.
• Develops and runs library outreach events for the Williams Lake Campus Library in order to promote awareness, increase student engagement, and provide academic support to students across all Williams Lake Campus programs.
• Contributes to Williams Lake Library communication initiatives, such as social media.
• Collaborates with other liaisons to support interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and collections.

General responsibilities
• Provides input for local staffing needs and staff training needs, in collaboration with Williams Lake Campus administration and the Associate University Librarian.
• Participates with the University Librarian and others in the development of library policies, planning, and strategic initiatives; participates in library faculty governance.
• Keeps up to date on developments in library service, resources, and technology in academic libraries.
• Participates in Library, Williams Lake Campus, and University committees, councils, task forces, and teams.
• Participates in professional organizations and professional development in academic librarianship as appropriate.

Position type and Salary:
• 3-year renewable tenure-track contract, starting January 2023
• Excellent benefits, including 40 days of vacation time and 20 days of professional development time per year

• Master's degree in Library Science/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program, or equivalent, conferred prior to appointment.
• Demonstrated ability to engage in outreach to build, enhance, and sustain partnerships with the campus community.
• Previous experience teaching information literacy to undergraduate students.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and implement new ideas.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working/teaching environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Previous experience as an academic librarian or working in an academic library
• Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment.
• A commitment to continuous learning and development.
• Knowledge of pedagogy, instructional design, or education theory.
• Demonstrated interest in student success and student learning.
