The School of Information Technology at York University invites applications from outstanding early career scholars who specialize in Social Computing to be nominated for a NSERC Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC). The successful CRC is expected to have the necessary qualifications to be appointed as a professorial tenure-track or tenured professor at the Assistant or Associate level. The start date for this position is July 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are specifically interested in applicants with an interest in the analysis of social interactions and networks using modern data analysis and artificial intelligence techniques for developing novel investigative approaches to study the role of computer mediation (e.g., social media) in social interactions and relationships in various aspects of life. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills particularly in areas pertaining to graph/network and social media analysis and/or artificial intelligence combined with a strong understanding of dominant theories and research approaches within social and behavioral sciences.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems or other discipline relevant to the subject, demonstrated excellence or promise of excellence in teaching and scholarly research and the active, ongoing, and substantial research portfolio of an emerging world‐class researcher with a demonstrated capacity for leadership and the potential to achieve international recognition in the field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated very strong ability to devise and apply diverse graph/network analysis and/or artificial intelligence techniques combined with a broad understanding of dominant theoretical and investigative perspectives within the field of social and behavioral sciences. Preference will be given to those with experience supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and/or the potential to attract, develop, and retain excellent students and future researchers. The successful candidate also must be eligible for and will be expected to hold NSERC research funding. The successful applicant will direct courses in social computing and social media as well as advanced courses in artificial intelligence and/or data analysis, contribute to curricular development in her/his area of specialization including the development of new programs, and participate actively in the graduate program. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop research linkages within York including with Sociology, Social Science, (Social) Psychology, Marketing, Communications, Geography, as well as Computer Science and Engineering. The successful candidate shall be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning is preferred.

The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program seeks to attract outstanding researchers for careers at Canadian universities. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., who, at the time of nomination, are within 10 years of attaining their highest degree, with consideration for career breaks) who have the acknowledged potential to lead their field of research. Appointment to a Tier 2 Chair is for five years, is renewable once, and comes with enhanced research support, access to infrastructure funding and other support from the program directly and from the university. Applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, including maternity leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.
