Research Assistant, Biological Sciences

The Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator the Research Assistant will assist the PI in statistical analysis of data and scientific reporting.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Leadership and Facilitation:

 Assist with preparing scientific reports and meeting deadlines
 Responsible for preparing figures, literature research, and other essential materials for scientific publications
 Directly consult on scientific, business, regulatory, or communication strategy related to demonstration projects
 Perform statistical analysis on large datasets, experimental design, scientific figure making, report writing
 Advise graduate students, postdocs, staff and APEX partners on experiment design, statistics, scientific figure making, report writing
 Develops positive, professional relationships with clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders within the team, Faculty and the University as a whole
 Advise on development of a water/wastewater surveillance concept for the LRG NFRF grant


 Develops materials to promote and highlight APEX
 Monitors, communicates and addresses changes of funding agency requirements and guidelines to PI/team


 Advise graduate students, postdocs, staff and APEX partners on experiment design, statistics, scientific figure making, report writing
 Acts as an integral resource to PI and team on operations support for research-related activities both within the group and externally
 Advises on policy and procedures for recruiting research associates and lab assistants
 Provides support to PI and collaborators regarding resource allocation and utilization in order to achieve strategic objectives

Scientific Reporting:

 Directly responsible for analysis of large datasets generated by the LRG laboratories
 Assists with the creation of publication quality figures for reports, journal articles, and grant proposals
 Compiling reports (financial reporting as well as scientific updates) as required by different granting agencies such as Genome Canada, NSERC, NCEs (some reports are required annually; some quarterly).
 Assist PI in the preparation of grant proposals (e.g., familiarity with competition guidelines, drafting sections of text, organizing CV to proper format, obtaining letters of support from collaborators.
 Conduct literature reviews as needed for reports, studies, and publications
 Submit grant proposals and reports on behalf of LRG and APEX
 Proof-reading of reports and manuscripts for group members on request (e.g. as an initial screen for certain colleagues requesting assistance, i.e., before the draft is sent to the PI).
 Preparing scientific research papers and abstracts as required by Dr. Lewis.
 Assist graduate students with project development and preparation of journal articles and statistical figures

Qualifications / Requirements:

 An undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, or physics is required
 Significant research experience (5-7 years) will be required. This extensive expertise in the field is a requirement due to the highly specialized nature of the research projects being conducted by the LRG.
 Significant experience in conducting statistical analyses on large datasets, and with data handling and QA/QC methodology is required
 Strong background in analytical and instructional figure creation is required
 Background in statistical analysis of large datasets is required
 Experience in assisting with writing and editing grants, grant reports, and white papers os required
 Experience in assisting with writing and publishing peer reviewed journal articles is required
 Previous experience assisting graduate students with project development is required
 Experience with Canadian grant submission, reporting, and administration systems including NFRF, MITACs, Alberta Innovates, Genome Canada, NSERC, Western Economic
Development, CIHR is required
 Proven excellent writing and proof-reading skills.
 Excellent computer skills is required
 Experience in sampling and analysis of source water and wastewater is required
 Experience with water quality regulations and permitting is required
 Experience working with individuals in regulatory agencies is required
 Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative, and flexible
 Experience managing a fee-for-service program at the university level is an asset
 Effective communication skills to be able to interact at all levels with stakeholders is required
 Ability to analyze information quickly, think creatively to resolve problems or develop opportunities is required
 Attention to detail and proven organizational skills required
 Strong critical thinking, judgement and decision-making skills
 Ability to work under pressure to meet strict and multiple timelines
 Effective leader, and the ability to work individually and as a team member
 Ability to interact comfortably with collaborators including colleagues from industry and government
