The Department of Civil Engineering in the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream position in Civil Engineering. This is an open Contractually Limited Appointment (CLA) to the teaching stream for a three-year term to commence July 1, 2027.
The Department of Civil Engineering https://lassonde.yorku.ca/civil/ is designing and building the systems we rely on every day, from resilient infrastructure and transportation networks to clean water solutions and sustainable communities. Established in 2012, the Lassonde School of Engineering http://lassonde.yorku.ca/, York University offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs to educate multidisciplinary problem solvers, critical thinkers, and entrepreneurs who understand creativity, communications, social responsibility, and cultural diversity.
The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for teaching and program development, with particular emphasis on the development, enhancement, coordination and delivery of laboratory practicum components of undergraduate courses (and possibly graduate courses), student capstone projects, and common core engineering courses. The successful candidate will also contribute to supporting student learning through pedagogical innovation, competency-based assessment, interactions with industry, learning technologies, and collegial governance of the program. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued advancement of the Department's educational programs and may have opportunities for programmatic leadership.
Candidate Qualifications:
- Degree: PhD or PhD near completion in Civil Engineering by the appointment’s start, with a substantial record of professional experience is required.
- Teaching:
- Strong knowledge of core areas of Civil Engineering, including engineering mechanics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, soil mechanics, foundations, water and wastewater treatment, and highway materials, as well as common core engineering subjects such as engineering ethics, creative problem solving and communication, engineering design, and project management. Experience teaching related areas, such as transportation planning and engineering, sustainable infrastructure, asset and project management, and/or advanced and emerging civil engineering technologies, will be considered an asset.
- A record or evident demonstrated commitment to, or potential for, contributing to the development and enhancement of educational programs, including curriculum development, coordination, accreditation, and curriculum quality assurance processes will be considered an asset.
- Experience with accreditation and curriculum quality assurance processes will be considered an asset.
- A record or evident promise of making valuable contributions through administrative and committee service.
- A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students at the university level (e.g. teaching accomplishments, pedagogical innovations, student and peer evaluations, or other relevant evidence).
- A record or evident promise of ability or potential to develop and deliver courses with significant laboratory practicum components.
- Ability to teach in both in-person and blended/remote settings and across the fall, winter, and summer terms, as required.
- Strong commitment to innovative pedagogy, student success, and competency-based assessment.
- Capacity to bring both theoretical and practical perspectives to Civil Engineering teaching.
- Additional: Candidates must hold or be eligible to obtain a Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) license in Canada shortly after their appointment.
Hiring Policies:
- The anticipated starting salary for this position at the rank of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream is in the range of $125,000 to $155,000 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. York University offers generous benefits and salary provisions.
