Tenure-Track appointment in Anishinaabe Studies

Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (shingwauku.ca) is committed to the restoration of the original spirit and intent of Chief Shingwauk, who envisioned a teaching wigwam where his people could acquire the necessary educational tools for life in modern society without compromising the values of their culture and traditions. Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig is one of the nine Indigenous Institutes recognized by the Ontario Government in the Indigenous Institutes Act (2017) and is accredited by the World Indigenous Nations’ Higher Education Consortium.
In cooperation and partnership with Algoma University, Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig offers the Anishinaabe Studies 3-year B.A. program and the 3-year BA in Anishinaabemowin. A summer immersion program in Anishinaabemowin runs annually. Algoma University, in partnership with Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Anishinaabe Studies, in the Department of Modern Languages at the Sault Ste. Marie campus, beginning July 1, 2019. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment (or to have progressed to the point where completion of the Ph.D. is imminent) in a discipline directly relevant to Anishinaabe Studies (a discipline relevant to Anishinaabe knowledge, research, and the communities of our region). Applicants will demonstrate a record of, or clear potential for, excellent research, teaching, curriculum development, and publication. Applicants will demonstrate a history of success in culture-based education and ethical engagement from within, or in respectful collaboration with, Anishinaabe communities, organizations, and/or institutions. Familiarity with cultural protocols, experience in curriculum development for culture-based education, and fluency in an Indigenous language (particularly any variety of Anishinaabemowin) are also assets.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic degrees held.
