Tenure-track appointment in Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and Urban Environments
The Department of Geography at Western University invites applications for a probationary (tenure-track) appointment in the area of Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and Urban Environments at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, effective July 1, 2020 or as negotiated. If qualifications and experience warrant a higher rank, consideration may be given to an appointment at the tenured level. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience.
The Department of Geography seeks applicants who specialize in geospatial big data, geocomputation, geovisualization and/or remote sensing with a focus on urban environments. We especially encourage applications from candidates working in urban development, transportation, health, smart and sustainable cities, or urban physical or ecological processes that build on existing departmental strengths. We expect the successful candidate to take an active role in bringing innovation and creativity to the development of our GIScience scholarship. The ideal candidate will also contribute to our Departmental research areas in physical and/or human geography and to Faculty related initiatives such as the Network for Economic and Social Trends, Centre for Environment and Sustainability, the Centre for Urban Policy and Local Governance, and the Department of Indigenous Studies, among others.
Applicants for a probationary (tenure-track) appointments must have completed a PhD degree in Geography or a related discipline; demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in research through a record of internationally recognized publications in leading journals and strong endorsements from referees; the ability, or potential to develop, the capacity to conduct innovative externally funded research; provide evidence of a strong record of teaching at the university level; and have excellent oral and written communication skills. Applicants for a tenured appointment must further provide evidence of academic leadership through the development of teaching and research initiatives related to Geographic Information Science.

Western Geography (https://geography.uwo.ca) is a research-intensive department that defines four fields of research: Geographic Information Science; Urban Studies; Environment, Resources and Development; and Physical Geography. These support doctoral- and masters-level graduate programs with an enrolment of approximately 75 graduate students. At the undergraduate level, we offer both BSc and BA degrees and a range of modules related to our research areas. The Department has identified urban environments as an overarching research theme and is a designated ESRI Canada Centre of Excellence.
