Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Urban and Inner-City Studies

University of Winnipeg

The University of Winnipeg Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies invites Indigenous applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or be very close to completion, with demonstrated teaching, research, and community experience. The position is designated for qualified candidates who self-identify as Indigenous persons. Applications are invited from candidates in any relevant discipline who will bring an Indigenous perspective to urban issues in their research and teaching.

Urban and Inner-City Studies is an interdisciplinary program that takes a place-based and community-engaged approach to studying cities and urban issues. We combine a critical urban studies focus with courses that examine various aspects of inner cities, such as urban Indigenous experiences, immigration, urban poverty, housing, the leadership of women and 2SLGBTQ+ people, and community organizing, planning, and advocacy. We offer a unique and exciting curriculum that connects theory and practice and prepares students to take on complex issues of social, political, economic, and spatial justice.

The Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies provides an opportunity to study cities in creative and experiential ways from our location in Winnipeg’s North End. Classes are offered at 541 Selkirk Avenue, in Merchants Corner. Here, students experience a welcoming and caring environment that values relationships and multiple ways of knowing, where students are supported and challenged to put their learning into action. Degree options include a 3-Year BA, a 4-Year BA, a Minor, and a two-year certificate.

We welcome applications from individuals who will strengthen our program’s commitments and approach in their research, teaching, and community engagement, and who have experience teaching students who face multiple barriers. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Colonization and Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and Métis Identity, Culture and Rights, and courses such as Confronting Racism and Oppression, Urban Poverty and Policy, Community Organizing for Social Justice, and Introduction to Urban and Inner-City Studies. They will also have the opportunity to develop special topics courses in their field of expertise.

As per our Collective Agreement, the successful applicant will receive a reduced teaching load in the first year and will be eligible for another in their second year. Additionally, faculty members who receive tri-council funding normally receive a yearly teaching reduction commensurate with their grant role.

The earliest start date for the appointment would be July 1, 2027, subject to budgetary approval.

Applicants are requested to submit a complete application that will include (all documents in PDF):

  • a cover letter (max 3 pages), outlining relevant experience in teaching, research/scholarship, and university or community service
  • a current curriculum vitae
  • evidence of relevant teaching experiences and effectiveness (which could include a statement of teaching methodology, course outlines, student evaluations of teaching)
  • a statement on research/scholarship, outlining past achievements, current project(s), and future directions
  • names and contact information of three references who can speak to their qualifications for the position
  • a confidential equity declaration (please complete the declaration at this link: Confidential Equity Declaration)

Applicants must submit all of the above materials through The University of Winnipeg’s online recruitment system (Avanti+ Recruiter).

Review of applications will begin on December 4, 2026 and will continue until the position has been filled.

We appreciate all applicants’ interest, but only those selected for further consideration will be contacted. For additional enquiries about this position, please contact:
