Tenure-Track Position Assistant Professor in Movement for the Actor

The University of Windsor invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the School of Dramatic Art, in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Movement for the Actor, commencing July 1, 2019. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

The School of Dramatic Art at the University of Windsor is one of the oldest and best established theatre and drama programs in the country. The School of Dramatic Art operates in a state-of-the-art facility, which opened in July 2003 and contains spacious studios for Acting, Voice, Movement, and Drama in Education and Community, and a flexible-seat Studio Theatre. All studios are equipped for video- conferencing, sound, and have computer connections for power point delivery. University Players, the acting company of the School of Dramatic Art, also operates a 322 seat main stage in Essex Hall. For this position, the School of Dramatic Art at the University of Windsor is particularly interested in candidates who are experienced movement specialists who can demonstrate a record as a skilled teacher and creator/producer of new work. In addition to teaching, the School seeks an individual with a demonstrated record of professional creative activity/research and a program of creative work to be achieved over the tenure timeline. The focus of this position is to teach undergraduate students in the BFA Acting program in the areas of movement and creation, and to provide a range of solid training that will prepare them for careers as professional actors and theatre artists/creators.

Responsibilities of this position include: teaching undergraduate courses in movement for the actor at the first, second, and third year levels in the BFA Acting Program; additional teaching may include other movement-related courses in the BA Honours program. Duties also include: developing a research/creative activity portfolio to achieve tenure, mentoring and coaching acting majors, engaging in curriculum development at the program level, providing academic advising, contributing to the student recruitment efforts of the department, and serving on appropriate committees in the practice of shared governance.

Essential Qualifications include: an MFA in Acting and/or Physical Theatre, or a Ph.D. with significant professional experience in the areas listed below; demonstrated experience teaching movement for actor at the university level with a particular emphasis on physical acting, expression, devising, and play is essential. Areas of expertise and specialization could include, but are not limited to, the following pedagogical and training approaches: LeCoq, Laban/Bartenieff, Alexander, Suzuki/Viewpoints/Composition, Margolis, contact, dance, stage combat, period, and mask. Other essential qualifications include: excellent interpersonal skills, including good judgement, diplomacy and tact; experience in administration in a University setting, including knowledge of undergraduate programs and policies; demonstrated organisational and administrative skills, including a proven ability to work as a team member or independently as required; demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills including an established record of exercising initiative, maintaining a high level of confidentiality, meeting deadlines; demonstrated understanding of the principles of anti-discrimination, staff and student equity, occupational health and safety and other relevant legislation.
