Tenure-Track Position in Experimental Radiation Physics

Position Description

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position with expertise in experimental radiation physics beginning July 1, 2021.

Candidates must have completed a PhD in a relevant discipline by the start date of the appointment, must demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain a vibrant program of research excellence, must have plans for recruitment and retention of a diverse research team, and show the potential for outstanding teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will have a record of research excellence in experimental radiation physics. A research program aligned with medical and/or health physics applications, complementary to existing experimental radiation physics research programs, and with potential links to other areas in the Department such as nuclear astrophysics or experimental condensed matter physics will be a distinct advantage. The successful candidate will excel in teaching radiation physics at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and is expected to contribute to teaching, including research supervision from a diverse pool of students, in the upper levels of the Medical & Biological Physics undergraduate and Radiation Sciences Graduate programs. Demonstrated potential to teach and supervise research students in the Department’s wider Physics programs will be welcomed. The successful candidate is expected make substantive contributions through service to McMaster, and the broader community, as well as actively contribute to the goals of equity, diversity and inclusivity at McMaster.

The Department encourages applications from early career researchers in industrial and government research laboratories, in addition to applications from academic researchers. The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level, with some credit towards the usual tenure-track timeline of six years negotiable for researchers with significant prior research experience. An exceptional candidate may be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.

The Department of Physics & Astronomy presently consists of 27 faculty and approximately 90 graduate students, with strengths in medical physics, astrophysics, soft condensed matter/biophysics, theoretical high-energy physics, condensed matter physics, elementary particle physics, laser physics, quantum optics and ultracold atoms.
