Limited Term Faculty Positions in Biology

The Opportunity

The Department of Chemistry and Biology in the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University is pleased to invite applications for three (3) one-year Limited Term Faculty (LTF) positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, in Biology. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2020, subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department of Chemistry and Biology consists of 37 tenure-stream faculty members. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate (Master’s and Doctoral) programs. Our Faculty prides itself on the excellence of its research and on the quality of its teaching. We are interested in candidates that will contribute to our existing teaching strengths by bringing innovative and diverse perspectives and experiences to their work.

These positions fall under the jurisdiction of the Ryerson Faculty Association (RFA) (www.rfanet.ca).

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage only in the teaching and service duties of faculty members in the Department, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across such activities. Each position entails teaching and course management obligations for a range of courses, including courses with large enrolments or management of a lab component. In particular:

Position 1: anatomy and physiology courses at both introductory and advanced levels;
Position 2: first year biology, anatomy and physiology, and zoology;
Position 3: first year biology, biochemistry, human genetics and stem cell biology.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant area of Biology and have post-secondary teaching experience. Previous experience with online teaching or innovative teaching approaches will be considered an asset.

Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching must be provided through a statement of teaching philosophy and, if available, descriptions of teaching accomplishments, including experience with course/curriculum review/development, excellent pedagogical practice, sample syllabi and teaching evaluations. Please demonstrate evidence of strong communication skills.

Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) as it pertains to service and teaching, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population. Candidates should provide a diversity statement that provides evidence of how candidates have demonstrated or will demonstrate their commitment to the application of EDI principles through teaching and service.

Candidates must demonstrate an ability to contribute to the life of the Department and the University through collegial service.

Note: Limited Term Faculty appointments at Ryerson University may not exceed a combined total of four years. Applicants with prior Ryerson LTF appointments need to consider this limitation, as it may render them ineligible to apply.
