The School of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Arts at Laurentian University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Sociology. The preferred start date is August 1, 2025.

Candidates must have completed a PhD degree by the start date of the appointment. Relevant teaching and research experience will be an asset. The successful candidate will possess the following essential qualifications:

● A PhD in Sociology or a related field.
● Indigenous identity (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) with ties to their community on Turtle Island, and specialization in Indigenous scholarship, research and teaching preferred.
● Demonstrated ability in teaching undergraduate courses effectively, with a strong commitment to pedagogical and academic excellence, and promoting a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment.
● Extensive experience teaching foundational courses in sociology, including introductory sociology, sociological theories, and research methods.
● Evidence of relevant research and scholarship, with the potential to collaborate with colleagues and build interdisciplinary or intersectoral collaborations within and outside the university.

The selected candidate will be required to:

● Teach in-person on campus while actively contributing to student learning within a collegial and cooperative academic environment.
● Actively participate in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, along with a commitment to program development and research.
● Actively involved in the administration of the program and the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
● Collaborate with faculty in the Criminology and Equity, Diversity and Human Rights programs (these programs are also offered by the Sociology unit) with commitment to promoting a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic academic environment.

While teaching for this position will be conducted in English, the selected candidate is expected to be functionally bilingual in both official languages (English and French) or, at least possess passive comprehension of both languages (receptive bilingualism).

Actively engaging in teaching and research, the successful candidate will establish a strong presence on campus, contributing to the School, Faculty, University, and broader community. The candidate will teach in-person as well as advance student learning in curriculum design and program oversight, all within a collegial environment.

The School of Social Sciences offers programs in English and French. Apart from undergraduate programs in Criminology; Economics; Equity, Diversity and Human Rights; Gerontology; Psychology; and Sociology; the School offers an interdisciplinary MA in Relational Studies and a PhD in Human Studies and Interdisciplinarity.
