The Department of Psychology at the University of Victoria in partnership with the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences at the University of British Columbia, invite applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Speech-Language Pathology to commence Date January 1, 2025, or as negotiated. The successful candidate will be a faculty member within the Psychology Department at UVIC and will teach within the UBC Distributed Speech-Language Pathology program, both located in Victoria, B.C.

Our department offers exciting undergraduate programs as well as graduate degrees in the areas of Cognition and Brain Sciences, Lifespan Development, Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Individualized Programs. School of Audiology and Speech Sciences at the University of British Columbia
The School of Audiology and Speech Sciences offers an intensive two-to-three-year Audiology or Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) graduate program consisting of coursework, research and supervised community-based clinical practice leading to the M.Sc. degree. The School also offers a PhD in Audiology and Speech Sciences.

The MSc in SLP program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Canadian University Programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. The SLP program is rigorous and scholarly and delivers a high standard of instruction and creative opportunities for learning. The three core content areas are developmental communication disorders, acquired communication disorders, and swallowing disorders. Through its active research programs, the School plays a leading role in advancing knowledge of human communication and related disciplines, and in the translation of novel research outcomes into best practices in many areas of SLP and Audiology.

The SLP program recently expanded from its original location in Vancouver-Point Grey to a second site on Vancouver Island thanks to an agreement with the University of Victoria, one of the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s affiliated institutions. This expansion is motivated in part to meet SLP recruitment and retention goals in this rapidly growing area of the province. New teaching and learning spaces are located at the Vancouver Island Technology Park. The first Victoria cohort started in September 2024.

Job Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will have:

Required education: Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology, or equivalent, as well as a Master’s level professional qualification in Speech-Language Pathology.

Required experience and skills in research: Qualified candidates will possess (commensurate with their experience) a record of high-quality scholarly achievement in basic, applied, or community-based research. For example:
• High quality scholarly contributions in outlets that are valued/appropriate (e.g., academic publications, community-based projects, etc.)
• Evidence of, or potential for, securing external research funding
• Evidence of, or potential for, facilitating a healthy lab environment that integrates diverse students and employees
• Potential for and interest in collaborating on research with other disciplines (e.g., Psychology, Health Sciences)
• Interest in collaborating with UVic and UBC faculty on research initiatives

Required experience and skills in teaching: Qualified candidates will demonstrate teaching effectiveness in their subject area, or strong potential for developing effective teaching abilities. They must also possess the ability to teach in a Speech-Language Pathology training program. For example:
• Demonstration of ability or potential to teach commensurate with experience, as evidenced by testimonials, teaching certificates, and/or attendance at teaching workshops; and other forms of documentation
• Ability and desire to teach courses in Speech-Language Pathology
• Demonstrated recognition of and openness to a diversity of student perspectives, experiences, and cultures, with ability, potential for, and/or interest in designing and applying inclusive approaches and techniques to ensure the success of diverse students
• Experience, strong potential, and or interest in supervising graduate and undergraduate research, appropriate to their level of experience and approach to scholarship

Required experience and skills in service: Qualified candidates will demonstrate strong potential for collaboration and positive contribution to the organizational environments. For example:
• Demonstrates an openness to equity and inclusivity, especially with respect to UVIC’s and UBC’s goals of decolonization and indigenizing the curriculum
• Contributes to a positive workplace environment
• Potential for and interest in collaborating within the UBC Speech-Language Pathology Distributed program and UVic Department of Psychology and Faculty of Health on research and professional activities

Required professional qualifications: Qualified candidates will be registered or eligible to register as a Speech-Language Pathologist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC).

The following are considered assets for this position: Teaching, research, and/or clinical experience in developmental communication disorders (e.g., augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), autism, fluency disorders, motor speech disorders, and/or voice/resonance disorders); demonstrated commitment to and/or interest in conducting or supporting meaningful collaborative research and consultation in Indigenous communities and/or community-based research.

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $102,000- $126,500.
