Associate Professor (Research Stream)

University of Victoria

The School of Health Information Science invites applications for a position of full-time Associate Professor (Research Stream) with eligibility for tenure, earliest appointment effective July 1, 2026, or as negotiated.

The candidate’s qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $140,000 - $170,000. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

The successful candidate will:
• Engage with research, teaching, or service that helps promote equity, diversity, and inclusion;
• Teach core courses in both the undergraduate and graduate programs in health informatics;
• Lead one or more research programs in a key or emerging area in health informatics;
• Maintain national and/or international visibility in the health informatics field through peer-reviewed publications, presentations and successful grant funding;
• Engage in curriculum development with the faculty;
• Provide mentorship including supervising Masters and PhD level students;
• Advise and consult for knowledge translation in health informatics;
• Participate in the life of the school, including serving on and leading committees and curriculum working groups.


Requirements
• A doctoral degree in Health Informatics or Biomedical Informatics is strongly preferred. Candidates with doctoral degrees in other highly related fields with research and prior coursework in health or biomedical informatics may be considered.

Applicants should have a strong research program in one or more key or emerging areas in health informatics. We are especially interested in applicants with research in artificial intelligence, data science, intelligent smart homes, or public health informatics. Applicants should have an established publication record in leading health informatics journals and conferences commensurate with rank and a demonstrated record of accomplishment in obtaining grants and/or contracts.

Applicants should have an excellent understanding of health informatics and strong communication, organizational and teaching skills. Applicants are expected to have a record of effective teaching and successful completed supervision of graduate students. Applicants should have experience in curriculum and course development. We are interested in applicants with a history of curricular leadership and administration.

Applicants should have demonstrated leadership with health informatics professional organizations internationally and/or within Canada. It is expected applicants will have a history of participation in School and University-level committees.

Evidence of effective teaching and research productivity (e.g. publications) in one or more key and emerging areas of health informatics and health information technology should be included in the application.

The School of Health Information Science is known nationally and internationally and has pioneered curricula in health informatics since 1981. The school offers several degrees: a BSc in Health Information Science, a Combined Major in Computer Science and Health Information Science, a MSc in Health Informatics and a PhD in Health Informatics, and a graduate certificate in health terminology and interoperability standards.

The Health Information Science undergraduate degree prepares students to work in all sectors of healthcare, including hospitals, government, consulting, healthcare software industry and allied health fields involving technology. Graduate degrees prepare students to work as leaders in the health informatics industry as well as academia.

The faculty in the School of Health Information Science have a long history of generating significant research and curriculum development grants and contracts and are involved in local, national and international projects related to health informatics.

Faculty and Librarians at the University of Victoria are governed by the provisions of the Collective Agreement. Members are represented by the University of Victoria Faculty Association.
