University of Winnipeg

The Art History Program in the Department of History at the University of Winnipeg invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Global Medieval Art, Architecture and Visual Culture c.500-1400 CE. The earliest start date for the appointment would be July 1, 2027, subject to budgetary approval.  See our Collective Agreement for salary information (https://www.uwinnipeg.ca/hr/docs/uwfa/uwfa-ras-2020-2027-final-2024-05-01.pdf).

The successful applicant will have expertise in the interconnections of the global medieval world seen through art, architecture and visual culture. The geographical field is open, but we welcome expertise in the Mediterranean, the Levant, Central Asia, northern and eastern Africa or Islamic Iberia with attention given to the interconnections of a given area with other parts of the world. We encourage applications from scholars interested in trans-regional and cross-cultural exchanges of visual culture in the larger medieval world.

Applicants with a completed Ph.D. in art and architectural history, medieval studies, or visual culture will be preferred. Students with a Ph.D. near completion may also be considered for the position. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of research productivity, teaching experience and be willing to engage in university service.

The University of Winnipeg is an urban campus on ancestral lands, Treaty One, in the heart of the Red River Métis homeland. We are a liberal arts and sciences institution with a diverse student body and a focus on undergraduate education. The History Department has 22 faculty members with varied research interests and offers three-year, four-year and honours undergraduate degrees. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise and to mentor students in the BA program, the Curatorial Practices stream within the Cultural Studies MA program, and the Joint Masters Program in History (with the University of Manitoba). We are interested in expertise that will bring new perspectives and paradigms to our department and connect with our broader scholarship.

As per our Collective Agreement, the successful applicant will receive a reduced teaching load in the first year and will be eligible for another in their second year. Additionally, faculty members who receive tri-council funding normally receive a yearly teaching reduction commensurate with their grant role.

The University of Winnipeg is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and recognizes that a diverse staff and faculty benefits and enriches the work, learning and research environments, and is essential to academic and institutional excellence. In accordance with the University of Winnipeg Employment Equity and Diversity Policy and section 11 of The Human Rights Code, this position is designated for qualified candidates who self-identify as women, racialized persons, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQ+ persons.
