Category of Appointment: Tenured
Rank/Position Title: Associate or Full Professor and SSHRC Canada Research Chair, Tier I
Start Date: January 1, 2027
Closing Date: Consideration of complete applications will begin on July 15, 2025.
Date Posted: June 2, 2025

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art, and Culture (ICSLAC) invite applications from qualified candidates for a SSHRC Tier I Canada Research Chair (CRC) appointment in Community-Engaged Arts and Humanities Research. The chair, whose appointment will be in ICSLAC and another FASS unit based on the research program of the successful candidate, will be at the rank of associate or full professor beginning January 1, 2027. Appointment is conditional on the approval of the application by the CRC Secretariat.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD within the arts and/or humanities and an established record of community-engaged research with equity-deserving groups. The successful candidate will have a strong record of externally funded research and will be a leader in bridging academic and non-academic communities through research, collaboration, and innovative forms of knowledge mobilization. We define the research area broadly to include scholars engaged in a wide range of disciplines and approaches. Similarly, we recognize that community as a concept may range from the local to the global. We value community-engaged research within the arts and/or humanities that challenges conventional academic approaches and foregrounds relationality, collaboration, and accountability.

The Chair will arrive in a dynamic intellectual environment in which community-engaged research is celebrated. Indeed, the University considers community engagement as “the cornerstone of Carleton’s culture”. The Chair will build on this commitment through their internationally recognized research program and the facilitation of a learning community that brings together researchers, students, and community members. Among arts and humanities researchers in FASS, there is a strong commitment to community-engaged methodologies. This is seen in the faculty’s leadership in curatorial innovation, digital humanities, public history, engagement with print cultures, research creation, and fine arts practices. A CRC in Community-Engaged Arts and Humanities will expand and deepen Carleton’s impact in these fields.

Tier 1 Chairs are intended for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. For more details, please see the Canada Research Chairs Secretariat at https://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/ and the Carleton Office for Research Initiatives and Services at https://carleton.ca/coris/.

About the Academic Unit
The chair would join the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), a research-intensive community including over 330 faculty members, CRCs in other disciplines and acts as a community of graduate, post-doctoral and undergraduate. The Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture (ICSLAC) includes faculty from across FASS.
