This is a three-year term position.
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time Teaching Professor for a 3-year term, at the assistant lecturer rank, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, with the possibility of renewal. The Faculty of Engineering provides state-of-the-art instructional and research facilities and a collaborative community dedicated to delivering an exceptional student experience. The successful candidate will contribute to the faculty's teaching mission by delivering high-quality undergraduate instruction, advancing the field of engineering education and supporting student learning within engineering programs.
Location - Work will primarily take place at the North Campus, Edmonton.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Department Chair, the Teaching Professor will be tasked with instructing undergraduate and graduate Mining Engineering courses throughout the academic year in addition to working with other faculty members to improve course content, resources, and delivery. Delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses in other specialties will be considered based on Department need and candidate experience.
The successful candidate will have an anticipated start date of September 1, 2026.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities associated with this role include the following:
Teaching of University Credit Courses:
• Provides instruction of undergraduate and/or graduate students.
• Design course syllabus; order textbooks and other course materials as required; prepare, administer, and mark final exams/assignments; complete records related to grades; may be required to prepare and/or administer deferred exams.
• Evaluates student performance progress and provides appropriate and timely feedback according to department protocols.
• May provide supervision to undergraduate and/or graduate students (i.e. Supervision of graduate students for thesis and MEng Capstone projects in collaboration with other faculty members).
• Demonstrates scholarship and remains current and competent in the discipline or profession by keeping course syllabi and assignments relevant to the needs of the current student.
• Attends course-related orientations, meetings and other activities related to teaching assignment.
• May be required to teach additional labs or seminars.
• May oversee Teaching Assistants assigned to the course(s).
• Hold office hours as per department policy and be available for email communications with students and the department
• Abide by Department, Faculty and University policies and procedures
Teaching-Related Activities:
• Coordinator role in undergraduate program.
• Participates in the design of courses.
• Participates in continual program improvement and accreditation processes.
• Mentoring teaching assistants.
• Other teaching-related duties appropriate for ATS that may be required from time to time
• Service Contributions:
Service Contributions:
• Participates in the development of curriculum.
• Participates in the governance of the Department through committee membership.
• Disseminates knowledge to the general public by making available their expertise and knowledge of the discipline.
• Other supplementary duties appropriate for ATS, as agreed upon and approved by the Department Chair.
Qualifications
Academic and/or Professional Qualifications and Competencies
• A Master's or PhD Degree in a relevant discipline is required.
• Eligible to obtain and maintain active registration (P.Eng. and/or P.Geo. as appropriate) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) during appointment as appropriate to the role.
• Recent experience in post-secondary teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
• Ability to create and foster a positive work culture for students.
• Ability to maintain positive relations with colleagues.
• Ability to employ varied teaching strategies.
• Ability to design or select and administer effective assessments.
• Exhibits clear and effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication style and collaborate with colleagues.
• Employs logical and responsible critical thinking and organizational ability.
• Demonstrates facilitation, negotiation and problem-solving skills and an ability to handle challenging student situations.
• Remains technically proficient in the computer environment and has a working knowledge of various applications to deliver teaching materials.
• Proficiency in relevant mining-related software.
• Consultancy and/or industrial work experience is considered an asset.
