Transportation engineering around the world is continually evolving to meet society’s mobility needs. The transportation engineer of tomorrow will not only be called upon to be proficient in the design, analysis and development of safer infrastructure and more efficient services, but also to apply the lessons learned from the past about the impact of transportation engineering decision-making on society to produce a more inclusive system. The growing recognition of public desire for the transition of vehicle spaces to people places, fostering active transportation and transit priority, incorporating complete streets, while also fostering regional and rural passenger and freight movement require both an understanding of the past, vision for the future, and the skills to connect the two. Research and training in these areas will contribute to UNB’s strategic research plan goal to mobilize knowledge to transform communities.
This is an opportunity for an individual to join a Civil Engineering Department in a period of growth while placing increased emphasis on the profession’s impacts on society and the environment through collaborative research and education offerings and contribute to research and teaching in transportation engineering. Our department delivers accredited BScE programs in Civil Engineering and Geological Engineering, offering fundamental undergraduate courses in transportation engineering and materials, as well as advanced electives, graduate courses, and research in areas of transportation engineering, transportation planning, pavement engineering.
Fredericton is an excellent setting to establish a research program focused on transportation engineering that is transformational for communities. This position would work collaboratively with the Transportation Group, which includes positions in Transportation Planning, Pavement Engineering, and Economics. The world is our laboratory, and the UNB Transportation Group works with many transportation infrastructure and service providers to advance research and practice in Atlantic Canada, while also sharing these lessons nationally and internationally.
This position also presents an opportunity to provide leadership for communities and infrastructure owners in terms of adapting existing transportation infrastructure for new uses, adapting to the impacts of climate change, and improving transportation safety and mobility. This can be done through establishing and maintaining an innovative, externally funded, research program, and contributing to the training of highly qualified professionals.
Applicants will be expected to have a PhD in Civil Engineering or a related field with evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in research and teaching and a commitment to an inclusive learning and working environment. Experience in engineering practice is also desirable, and the potential to collaborate with and complement other researchers in the Department or at the University will be considered an asset. Applicants must be eligible and willing to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of New Brunswick.
