The English Department at Mount Saint Vincent University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Enlightenment-Era Rhetorics and/or Eighteenth-Century Literature at the Assistant Professor level starting 1 July 2026. We are especially interested in scholarly programs that include a focus on one or more of the following: critical humanism, transatlanticism, African diasporas, critical race theory, feminisms, gender and sexuality, political rhetorics, and children’s literature.

The successful applicant will be able to teach courses relating to the writing and ideas of Enlightenment-era rhetoric and/or eighteenth-century literature, with the ability to teach courses in our Writing minor being desirable. Our Writing program is distinctive in Canada insofar as it is informed by scholarship produced in the field of Rhetoric and Composition, which engages rhetorical theory, history, and pedagogy as they pertain to the theoretical and practical study of writing. Candidates should also describe other, secondary areas of teaching and research interest, particularly as they relate to the areas listed above. Documented experience and expertise in teaching undergraduate courses at all levels are assets.

Applicants should have a PhD or PhD near completion in a relevant field. For this position, the department especially encourages candidates who identify as Indigenous, Black, and/or as Persons of Colour to apply.

The MSVU English Department has a dynamic undergraduate program, which includes both English and Writing courses, and has a strong record of excellence in teaching and research. The duties of the successful applicant will include teaching a range of literature and writing courses at all levels as part of a regular teaching load, maintaining an active scholarly/professional program, and participating in collegial service.

Applications should include a cover letter detailing how the candidate meets the above criteria, curriculum vitae, teaching dossier (including a statement of teaching philosophy and sample syllabi), statement of current and future research interests, and contact information for three referees.

The department will begin considering applications on 31 October 2025. All qualified candidates, including women, persons of any sexual orientations and gender identities and/or expressions, Indigenous persons, African Canadians, other racialized groups, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Agreement (please visit www.msvufa.ca). All positions are subject to final budgetary approval.
