Tenure Track Position - Department of Music - Faculty of Arts

University of Prince Edward Island

The Department of Music at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a tenure-track position in Music Theory. Responsibilities will include the instruction of core courses in music theory. Additional teaching duties based on the strengths of the successful candidate will be assigned, so the ability to teach in other areas of our music curriculum – such as Applied Woodwinds, Applied Percussion, Aural Skills, Composition, World Music, Ethnomusicology, Jazz and/or Popular Music, Performance Psychology, or Indigenous and/or BIPOC Music – would be a strong asset. The individual would be expected to maintain a high level of scholarship and/or performance at UPEI and beyond.

In addition, the successful candidate will value the principles of collegiality, and will be expected to contribute to service within the department. In addition to assisting with curricular development, recruitment, outreach, and department activities, the individual will coordinate the theory and aural skills areas of the curriculum to ensure that these two related sets of core courses align in terms of curricular outcomes and reinforcement of concepts, especially since Aural Skills tends to be taught by various sessional instructors. Our ideal candidate will understand Atlantic Canadian culture and students, recognize the distinctive qualities of an “Island” identity, and foster an intimate, caring atmosphere which encourages each of our student musicians to build confidence and skills to express their individual creativity.

The successful candidate may be expected to teach in graduate programs in the Faculty of Arts.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in a relevant area of music (or be close to completion), with at least a master’s degree in Theory or Composition; demonstrate commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, with university teaching experience being a strong asset; provide evidence of scholarly and/or creative achievement; and demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
