Applications are invited for a full-time, tenure-track Professor of Teaching in Emergency & Critical Care (E&CC) position in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (https://wcvm.usask.ca/departments/small-animal.php) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) (https://wcvm.usask.ca/), University of Saskatchewan (USask).

This position entails a 75% commitment to veterinary service and teaching, including the clinical supervision of house officers and fourth-year students, classroom teaching, and laboratory supervision within the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. The remaining 25% of the appointment will be devoted to scholarly activities, administrative responsibilities, and other academic pursuits. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate progressive growth and professional development in teaching and educational pedagogy, consistent with the University’s Standards for Promotion and Tenure.

The selected applicant will play a key role in providing active supervision and instruction of house officers and senior veterinary students during clinical rotations, contributing to hands-on learning in an emergency and critical care setting. There may also be primary case responsibilities, providing high-quality emergency and critical care for small and exotic animals presenting to the Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC) (https://vmc.usask.ca/). This role emphasizes timely case management, effective collaboration with specialists, and clear communication with clients and referring veterinarians. The E&CC veterinarian supports hospitalized patient care while reviewing and maintaining accurate medical documentation and fostering a positive, team-oriented clinical environment.

The E&CC service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and includes a mixture of primary care emergency cases and referral cases. Our intensive care unit is open-concept and equipped to enable advanced care for critically ill patients with routine use of mechanical ventilation and a well-equipped in-house blood bank. There are three Registered Veterinary Technicians working at the VMC who have Veterinary Technician Specialties in E&CC. 

The work of the E&CC service is highly integrated with that of the Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM) service. Currently, the E&CC service is staffed by a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC), an experienced emergency care veterinarian, and rotating interns. The SAIM service includes three American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Diplomates, with an ACVIM Diplomate in Neurology expected to join the service in January 2027. 

The WCVM is Western Canada’s regional college of veterinary medicine and currently enrolls about 360 veterinary students from three western provinces and northern jurisdictions. Approximately 90 fourth-year DVM students complete 40 weeks of clinical rotations, during which they develop, integrate, and apply veterinary medical knowledge and skills under supervision in a variety of clinical settings.

Located within the WCVM, the VMC is a state-of-the-art hospital and referral centre accredited by both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association. The VMC offers specialty services and training in anesthesia; behaviour; dentistry; dermatology; exotic, wild, and zoo animal medicine; internal medicine; medical imaging; nutrition; oncology; ophthalmology; radiation oncology; rehabilitation; surgery; and theriogenology. The VMC is the leading provider of comprehensive emergency and critical care services in Saskatchewan.

Candidates must possess a DVM degree or equivalent, have completed an approved residency in E&CC, and be board-certified by, or eligible for certification through the ACVECC at the time of appointment. An advanced degree in a related discipline will be considered an asset. The individual appointed to the position must also be eligible to work in Canada and hold, or be eligible to obtain, licensure with the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (https://svma.sk.ca/become-a-member/dvm/). 

The salary range for this position for the 2026–2027 academic year is $113,527 to $135,535, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
