The University of Northern British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with expertise in conservation science and practise, recreation ecology, parks and protected areas, and/or ecologies of travel and tourism to serve the Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management (ORTM) program ( ORTM recognizes the need to diversify mentorship and approaches to conservation, parks, and outdoor recreation, and the associated opportunities in doing such work. The program also has an ongoing history of working with First Nations and Métis communities. ORTM sits alongside allied programs within the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management, which is housed in the new Faculty of Environment. The proposed start date is January 1, 2023.

We seek candidates who will develop a vigorous, externally funded, long-term research program among the specified research area(s). UNBC values interdisciplinarity, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with diverse members in the Department, Faculty, and University as well as national and international colleagues. Current faculty in ORTM have expertise in sociocultural and socioecological approaches to outdoor and adventure recreation and nature-based tourism, wilderness philosophy and ethics, as well as place-responsive outdoor and environmental education and leadership.
The successful candidate can anticipate working collaboratively with colleagues at UNBC as well as scholars and managers within conservation groups, First Nations, government, and/or industry.

Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management at UNBC offers two degrees: a Major in Wildland Conservation and Recreation within the BSc Conservation Science and Practice, and a BA in Nature Based Tourism Management. This combination of a BSc and a BA is unique in Canada, and we seek candidates who will enjoy working across and contributing to these two degrees. In addition, UNBC offers opportunity to teach and supervise in relevant graduate degrees at the Masters and PhD levels through the Natural Resource and Environmental Studies (NRES) graduate program (

Applicants for this position should hold a Ph.D. and have suitable experience demonstrating research, service and teaching competencies. The successful candidate will have a strong record of scholarly activity and productivity, and be willing to work towards teaching several courses a year in conservation science and practice, parks and protected areas, recreation ecology, and/or tourism impacts at both undergraduate and graduate levels. UNBC is a research-intensive university, within which the ORTM program and degrees incorporate contemporary scholarship with an approach that is student-centred and service-oriented. ORTM classes typically use field-based experiential education. The ability to lead and work with students in backcountry and remote settings is a significant asset.

The Northwest campus in Terrace is situated on traditional Ts’msyen (Tsimshian) territory of the Kitsumkalum and Kitselas First Nations. It includes a satellite campus in the coastal community of Prince Rupert.
