Assistant Professor - Great Lakes Indigenous History

The Department of History and the Centre for Indigenous Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Great Lakes Indigenous History. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of History (51%) and the Centre for Indigenous Studies (49%) at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on July 1, 2020, or shortly thereafter.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in History or Indigenous Studies by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching, and a commitment to shaping the future of the field of Indigenous historical studies. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing department and program strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. The successful candidate’s research will be in the area of Great Lakes Indigenous history, with particular emphasis on material culture. In addition, the successful candidate must have demonstrated research-level capacity in an Indigenous language.

Candidates will have an emerging record of scholarly accomplishments and will provide evidence of excellence in research as demonstrated by publications in leading, field relevant academic journals, or forthcoming impactful publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, a strong record in Indigenous research methodologies and ethical engagement, collaboration with Indigenous communities, organizations, and institutions, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, through a teaching portfolio that includes a statement of teaching philosophy that is linked to evidence of excellent pedagogical practice, sample course syllabi, demonstrated knowledge and experience in Indigenous-based teaching methods, and excellent course evaluations (and/or demonstrated superior performance in other teaching-related activities, including performance as a teaching assistant, or experience in leading successful workshops and seminars), as well as strong endorsements from referees. The candidate's responsibilities will include teaching large and small undergraduate courses in Indigenous Studies and undergraduate and graduate courses in History.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
