Assistant Professor in Materials Engineering
University of British Columbia
The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) seeks an outstanding individual for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of composite materials, specifically polymer matrix composite materials and structures (in exceptional cases appointment at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered). The starting date of the position will be July 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Department of Materials Engineering at UBC (referred to as the Department) has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Over this period, the Department has distinguished itself with excellence in teaching and research in materials processing. We are now seeking a dynamic, emerging leader in the area of polymer matrix composite materials and structures, having interest and expertise in both experimental and modelling approaches. Linking materials science and mechanics approaches in the context of digitalization, the successful candidate will be interested in linking process to microstructure and resulting mechanical and other properties, at all size scales of interest in advanced composites. Experience and interest in interacting with industry is desired, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate extensively through the existing Composites Research Network (https://crn.ubc.ca/) and Composites Knowledge Network (https://crn-km.org). Further information on the Department is available at www.mtrl.ubc.ca.
Applicants must have either a demonstrated track record or possess a clear potential to achieve excellence in research and teaching and must be willing to work with, or have experience working with industry, to implement innovative solutions for manufacturing challenges. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, internationally recognized research program, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise graduate students at the Masters and Ph.D. levels and provide service to the University and the community.
The candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree, or equivalent, in Materials Engineering or a closely related field, and will be expected to register as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a statement (1-2 pages) of technical and teaching interests and accomplishments, including information on how their research and/or teaching would contribute to a diverse academic environment, and the names and addresses (e-mail included) of four referees. Applications must be submitted online at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/careers-postings/faculty.php.
The initial closing date for applications is February 29, 2020 but applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.
